What are SGOT and SGPT?

What are SGOT and SGPT?
Both SGOT and SGPT are enzymes produced by liver cells of which SGPT is very much liver specific. When the liver cells get damaged these enzymes get released and their levels in the blood go high. As for instance, in case of viral infection of the liver called Hepatitis, the levels can be very high due to cell damage and by monitoring them regularly the doctor can assess the severity as well as the improvement or deterioration. This ofcourse has to be taken into account as with other tests and investigations. SGPT on the other hand can be produced by cells from other parts. This in a nutshell and if your enzymes are persistently high further investigations are indicated. Finally, both the enzymes SGOT and SGPT were re-named over two decades ago and are now known as ALT and AST.

What Do High Levels OfSGOT/SGPT In A Liver Test Mean?

People who live a sedentary lifestyle, do not eat healthily and constantly consume alcohol are likely to develop fatty liver or cause other damages to the liver. One of the most common blood tests is a liver blood test, which assesses liver functions or liver injury. A basic liver blood test determines the level of certain enzymes (proteins) in the blood, which regulate the functioning of important chemical reactions in the body. Among the most sensitive and widely used liver enzymes are the aminotransferases. They include aspartate aminotransferase (AST or SGOT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT or SGPT).

An increase in the SGOT and SGPT levels are indicative of a certain liver damage and getting a proper diagnosis is recommended in that case.

Whatare normal levels of SGOT (AST) and SGPT (ALT) ?

  •          The normal range of values for AST (SGOT) is about 0 to 40 units per liter of serum (the liquid part of the blood).
  •          The normal range of values for ALT (SGPT) is about 0 to 50 units per liter of serum.

However, the ranges of AST and ALT numbers may differ slightly depending on the technique and protocols used by different laboratories worldwide. However, normal reference ranges are routinely provided by each laboratory and printed with each patient's individual report.
